The following 15-minute writing exercise was inspired by a comment Peter left in response to our previous post.
"Matissta -- did you see the comment Peter posted on the blog? He asked me what Super Power I would want and it couldn't be the power to take other people's powers."
"What did you tell him?"
"I'm kind of embarrassed to share my very first answer -- the one I had as soon as I read it -- but it was something like, 'I wish I had the power not to live with so much fear and regret.'"
"But is that a Super Power?" asked Matissta. "Also, don't you have to have a cool name for a Super Power, you know like 'Ant Man'? What would your Super Power name be?"
"Pope SHARON! Turn off the TV, for crying out loud. You've been watching the Pope 24/7."
"But the Pope does indeed make me cry out loud!"
"Maybe your Super Power should be getting through the day without crying out loud."
"What would my Super Power name be -- 'Mighty Matissta'? Crying is good for the soul. Actually, it can be very cathartic and healing. Isn't that powerful? I bet the Pope cries at least once a day."
"Yeah -- but he's the Pope -- he's supposed to do that. Look at all those abused and disabled people he's seeing. And the poor, the prisoners, refugees, immigrants. He's got to comfort the WHOLE world."
"But every time he kissed a baby or disabled person, I just cried. I wondered why I couldn't step outside myself and my depression long enough to go into the streets of DC and touch the homeless."
"Sharon -- you're always dumping on yourself, berating yourself, comparing yourself to others. If I could give you a Super Power it would be to believe in yourself, and your Super Power name would be 'Sharon I Am.'"
"But wouldn't I first have to have the power not to live with so much fear and regret?"
"Nope. Believe in yourself and fear and regret melt away because you have laser eyes that see who you really are."
"But isn't 'Sharon I Am' kinda lifted from Dr. Suess?"
"So what? You always tell me that good ideas can come from stealing with good judgment. 'Sharon I Am' is a perfectly cool Super Power name. Think of the places you'll go . . . and don't worry, I'll drive."
