Today is nowayasista's! birthday! Happy Birthday, noway!
To celebrate, the Sassistas! want to share burger recipes! We know how much noway loves to grill and how much he loves burgers.
What's more, on Tuesday, the New York Times "Dining & Wine" section featured "The Perfect Burger and all Its Parts" (click here for the link). Be sure to check out interactive feature called, "Elements of an Ideal Burger."
But wait! There's even more! Just yesterday, McDonald's began selling a new line of bigger burgers priced at about $4 each for a beefy alternative to pricier burgers at sit-down restaurants. The new Angus burgers are made with one-third pound of Angus beef and come in three varieties — a deluxe burger with pickles and tomatoes, a mushroom swiss burger and a bacon and cheese burger.
Burgers at fast-casual competitors like Five Guys or at sit-down chains like Chili's Grill & Bar can cost as much as $8 or more.
The burgers the Sassistas! grill cost about a buck. Read the sass feed for more details as well as our favorite burger recipe. Please share yours. Happy Birthday nowayasista!
Matiss doesn't eat beef or pork, so we grill turkey burgers. We get pre-made patties on sale: 4 patties for 2 bucks. A package of 8 potato hamburger buns on sale for 2 bucks. We melt mozzarella cheese (the expensive kind in a container filled with water) onto the patty. Add a thick slice of home-grown tomato and fresh basil. Done. If we didn't add the mozzarella, the burger would cost about a buck. Add the mozzarella and it costs about five bucks, I guess.

By the way, this past winter I indulged in a Five Guys cheeseburger with a side of cheese fries. The burger was the size of a hub cap, and I can still feel the cheese fries in my stomach.

Good Morning Sistas & Mistas! Noway got planema for his first birthday present. Yesterday's 6 PM flight didn't leave Denver until 11 PM, which means he canoed to the island at 5AM! He's still snoozing ... but I'll try to have him check-in later between fishing, swimming, waterskiing, etc. The best gift: after seven grey rainy days, today is a sunny day with a bright blue sky and more are forecast for the holiday weekend!
Tonight, along with noway's birthday, we'll celebrate my nephew's 21st ... and guess what the menu is? Burgers, of course, and brats, because this is Wisconsin after all. Same thing is on the Lion's Club menu for the 4th of July town picnic tomorrow, only corn on the cob will be added. They soak the cobs in salt water and grill them in the husks, steaming them to perfection, peeling them piping hot when they serve them. Hope you all have a tasty and relaxing 4th of July weekend!

Hey PEACE! Give noway my sympathies. I very empathic about planema and car problems. Not so good with sins of weakness.
Matissta told me just the other day about the proper way to grill corn on the cob -- that you needed to soak them first in ice cold salt water, and I didn't believe her. Guess she told me. We're going to try that this weekend.

Oldest son's favorite burger:
Place grilled burger on crusty french roll spread with boursin cheese. Top burger with grilled onions. Yummo!

I like to mix the hamburger meat with Lipton's onion soup mix then top the grilled burgers with cheese and put on a toasted bun. I fix mine with mayo (not mustard and ketchup - that's for McD's burger that I also like but they're a different food altogether) and tomatoes and onions.

No recipes from me, but I read enough of the NYT article to see what I wanted - it's all about the fat! After literally years of buying the leanest meat for my health conscious husband, it finally dawned on me I could also buy the fatter stuff for the rest of us who actually want taste in a burger made at home.
My secret to great burgers is hanging out with better cooks than myself. Made plans for tomorrow with one of those cooking club types.
Happy birthday noway! Have a blast playing outside this weekend.

babysis: Jersey is contemplating getting up REAL early in the mornin' with her two dawgs and driving here to watch the Williams' sisters at Wimbledon. Break your plans with the cooking-club types and drive up here with the good-sipping-tequila-types. A good tequila makes everything taste better -- even at 9 a.m.
Ask Jersey.

Thanks for the birthday wishes. Kind of cool driving through the night fog on these old roads finished by paddling a canoe as the sun was coming up.
I think a good burger is all about attitude. I have had great ones scorched by open campfires, great ones grilled to perfection, great ones dripping raw. Kind of like everything else I suppose. Have a great 4th.
Oh yes... to have a truly great burger cold beer is almost a prerequisite. Local stuff in tall bottles.

Happy birthday, noway! Wishing you hot burgers and cold beers.

noway -- when Matiss and I come in a couple of weeks, I want one of the burgers that PEACE described with that boursin cheese crap and onions. Also local beer in tall bottles.

Happy Birthday, Nowaysista! Paddling out to the island at sunrise sounds beautiful - hope you and PEACE and the whole Sassistas! family have a great Holiday weekend!
(I"m not the cook, I'll bow to Planta for that...)

Ooh, tempting offer Flannista, but you'll have to party without me. My plans are to simply make it out of bed by 9 am. The cookout will follow the ladies final. Bought the cold beer today.

Happy Birthday, noway. Happy 4th, burgers, bar-b-que, and (for us) mango margaritas to the sphere.

Jersey is driving down tomorrow mornin', Carolyn. Spontaneous thing with her two dawgs in the yard. Yeah, like that Crosby, Stills and Nash song. Hoist a couple of them mango margaritas for us. Miss you.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY NOWAY!!! Hope you have the best year ever. Loved the photo from PEACE the other day. Fabulous.
I so wish I could join the Sassistas Tennis Festival tomorrow - would love to hang out with you all. Too fun!
Watched a guy who wrote Food Inc. on Jon Stewart last week. Don't watch it (or read book) before enjoying your 4th of July barbecues. I'm trying to get all the bad news out of my brain before heading to a party tonight and one tomorrow.
Tonight's is for a just-back-from-Iraq Marine, so that should be AWESOME. Its a surprise party, which doesn't seem like the best idea in the world, but I've been assured there'll be no jumping out of the bushes, just a party ready when he returns from taking the kids to the movies this afternoon. In fact, I've got to go jump in the shower so we can head over there.

(notice my self-control in not posting about Sarah Palin? This is my birthday present to Noway, who I know holds more conservative views that I do. A one-day moratorium on snarky political remarks. xoxo)

You and me both, West! :-)
