Following an intense day in the sassosphere, the Sassistas! think we need to kick back a little today and take in an extraordinary short video discovered by Matissta. A "combo" of wall artists got together to create a 4-minute stop-motion animation sequence. It loops twice, which is great as you'll want to watch it again.
MORE animation by Blu can be found at http://vimeo.com/blu.
Have you ever posted graffiti? If so, where and what was your message? Or, if you COULD post graffiti, what would it be? Pretend the sassosphere has a huge graffiti wall. Here's your paintbrush -- what will you paint?
Again, I am rushing around to get to the airport.
Thank you, Matissta, for finding this video. She actually found it months ago, but we were waiting for the right moment to post it. I watched it again this morning. Just so fun and clever.
I needed it.

For the life of me, I can't imagine how long it took to do this video. Months? Do you know, Matissta? I can't imagine sticking to something so painstaking for this long, unless I was a mother raising kids.

Flann, are you going to or coming from Ireland? Or, are you still at the mercy of the evil king in the Mouse House?
Never posted graffiti. It's vandalism in most cases. Hmmm, don't know what the graffiti would be if I posted it...probably explosions of color a la Monet. The sassosphere would probably inspire a completely different kind of graffiti, but i don't know what that would be. I'll think about it.

What I love about art, drama, music, literature is when it makes me feel privileged to have experienced it. This video does that for me. Amazing.

I did a sociology report on graffiti in high school. I had a little notebook where I wrote it all down. I collected it everywhere, wherever I saw it. I'd have guys report on it from men's rooms for me and I collected it from women's rooms. In general, the men's room graffiti was cleverer. Now you've got me wondering, are more muralists men or women? Who is doing most of the public art projects out there on the sides of buildings, etc.?
Thanks for the wonderful video, a great boost of creative inspiration to start the day. It reminded me of Tibetan sand mandalas, the way a scene was created and then painted over with a roller ... a lesson in impermanence ... but the video remains!

PEACE, according to the website for the National Society of Mural Painters, 20 of its 51 members are women. This organization works with organizations to produce murals for buildings.

I'm not a fan of graffiti, when people simply "tag" something with their initials or name. I do, however, enjoy murals. I think the most successful murals are the ones that are permitted/hired to by the building owner or supported financially in some way.
I first discovered Blu, an Italian artist, with this video, http://vimeo.com/993998 I had never witnessed such a thing. I was amazed at the time, patience, and simple creativity. I could never create in this freeform way. None of it is planned, which still amazes me.
This second video I found interesting because it's a collaborative piece. You truly have to respect each other, compromise and put the egos aside to produce a work together.
The second artist is David Ellis, who is also a graffiti artist, but more in the standard sense. Paints an image in a single place. Blu is the one, who makes it into an "animation" so to speak. David's videos can be found at http://vimeo.com/davidellis/videos
The video above was produced during the http://www.famefestival.it/ but it doesn't mention how long it took them to create it. (The site has some interesting videos, if you want to poke around.) This festival takes place every year and is sponsored by http://www.studiocromie.org/ Who knew?
It always amazes me how much is going on that I'm not aware of.

Thanks, half-a, for the research (or sassearch in this case.) I'm glad to know that.

ARTISTS ROCK

Finally got it to work for me (yay, computer!). Very clever, but not what I would consider graffiti. Mural, or just creativity finding an out. The sounds really adds to the video, enjoyed it tremendously. Did anyone else wonder how much paint they must have gone thru? And the collaboration between the various artists - that's very cool, indeed.
These guys were so talented - anything I could paint would look very amateur next to them. But probably a sunrise over the hills, water in the foreground, maybe add some trees for interest.
:-)

Chryso -- I agree that this video is not really graffiti, but if I asked the sistas and mistas to paint something or come up with a concept for a stop-animation wall mural, everyone would have panicked and been intimidated. Besides, I think we've always wanted to spray paint something somewhere, so why not in the 'sphere where you can't get arrested for vandalism?
Thanks, Matissta for all those other links. You really have an eye for very interesting stuff. I'm reminded of that "Birds on a Wire" video from September. Remember?:
