It's that time of year again! That time when the Sassistas! sit in dark theaters for most of the day for a week and watch documentaries that alternatively challenge our thinking, break our hearts or slap us upside the head. Yes, it's time for SILVERDOCS! Check out the "sizzle reel" above!
Sadly, SILVERDOCS will be missing one key component this year, namely Matissta, who must continue her ongoing web development education in the evenings and weekend. Stepping up to the SILVERDOCS plate, however, will be our own Sista C, who is flying in on Wednesday to join Flannista in this documentary marathon.
This year marks the 10th year for SILVERDOCS which has grown into a national venue (after Sundance) for "must-see" documentaries. Oscar documentary winners such as "Taxi to the Dark Side," "Man on Wire," "No End in Sight" and "Grizzly Man" all played at previous SILVERDOC festivals. This year, SILVERDOCS will be showing several of the 2012 Sundance Documentary winners, such as "The House I Live In", "Searching for Sugar Man," "The Queen of Versailles" and "Detropia". Flannista and Sista C plan to see each one and hope that Matissta might be able to join us on Friday and Saturday evenings.
Flannista will be on her own today at SILVERDOCS and will post from her iPhone when she can. In the meantime, check out the film roster (in the link in the first paragraph) and let us know which documentaries you believe are "must-sees"!
See you at "The DOCS" . . . what Sista C calls our annual week of films that examine the worst and best of what it means to be human.
BREAKING DOCS SASS! BREAKING DOCS SASS!
Last night, Matissta and I attended Opening Night at SILVERDOCS that featured, "Don't Stop Believin': Everyman's Journey" by Romana S. Diaz about the Filipino singer Arnetl Pineda who becomes lead singer for the rock band, Journey. Guess who was there at the center of attention? The ACTUAL lead singer? Nope, someone even MORE FAMOUS!! Michaele Salahi with Neal Schon, Journey lead guitarist and former flame (who knew)? She was clinging to him the ENTIRE NIGHT -- "lovin', touchin', squeezin"!!

I love Sista C's name for the week, "The DOCS".
"Don't Stop Believin'" wasn't very good, by the way, even if -- GET THIS -- Michaele and what's-his-name sat right behind us. All the women in their entourage were wearing skimpy little dresses and really, really high heels. I mean REALLY. How do they walk in those things? Of course, they probably don't have to walk much . . .

The roster for this year's films looks amazing --better than any year that I've attended. treesta may be able to join me this evening for this film: "The Waiting Room". Here's a link to its website:

Have a grand time today, Flann. Yes, please give us updates between films!
Posted by: treesta | June 19, 2012 at 06:23 AM
I plan to phone in comments to Matissta because it's a pain to post too much from my iPhone. When Sista C arrives, I plan to crash at her hotel and will have my laptop and will be able to post more, I hope.

Um Flann, you originally posted the name of the Journey guitarist incorrectly. You wrote "Nick", it's Neal. I've fixed it, but if you're going to mock the man you should get his name right!
Posted by: Matissta | June 19, 2012 at 07:05 AM
How stupid is that, Matissta? I spell Michaele's weird name correctly, but forget his. She would LOVE that story, just LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it!
By the way, did you notice how her 10-inch spike heels covered more of her body than her dress? I also actually heard her say a three-syllable word (she was only two feet away): "Ki-ki-kiss me, baby," but Neal beat me to it, thank gawd.

How does that woman make a living?
Posted by: Justista | June 19, 2012 at 07:23 AM
Never mind
Posted by: Justista | June 19, 2012 at 07:24 AM
Just, she's probably friends with the Kardashians. You see where I'm going with this?
Posted by: Matissta | June 19, 2012 at 07:48 AM
Have fun today, Flannista! I will be sitting as much as you today on our all day drive, but I won't be having NEARLY as much FUN! Enjoy your popcorn.
Posted by: PEACEsista | June 19, 2012 at 07:53 AM
PEACE -- I'll also have some of the Sno-Caps Sista C sent to me earlier this year. Between Stella on tap, popcorn and the Sno-Caps, I figure I've covered all the major food groups.
"How does that woman make a living?"
Justista, you make me blush. She's the band lawyer/accountant, of course.

This is killing me that I can't go! The films do look amazing this year.
Posted by: Matissta | June 19, 2012 at 09:32 AM
Oh, Matiss, I feel really bad, but I am really, really going to try and get some tickets for Friday and Saturday nights.
Posted by: Flannista | June 19, 2012 at 09:42 AM
I'm off to the DOCS!!!
Check in later!
Posted by: Flannista | June 19, 2012 at 10:24 AM
Well, I'm packing right now. Got a B12 shot yesterday to keep up with Flann during the Docs. Got a feelin' the gal is all over the place, and I intend to keep up.
Looking forward to seeing Matissta and treesta. My room has an open door and an open bar, so all sistas who happen to live up this way feel free to stop-by.
Not kidding about that B12 shot.
Posted by: Sista C | June 19, 2012 at 10:33 AM
Sista C, do what you can do. You can always take a nap during the day with your hotel room down the road. Smart to get the B12 shot, because Flann is like a marathon runner during this week.
I'm anxious to hear what you think about How to Survive a Plague. I knew several people in NY who were involved in ACT UP. They proved that Silence = Death was true. They were considered rebels at the time, but thankfully for this group they changed how AIDS was addressed and handled. Patients were treated with such disrespect before groups like this formed.
Also looking forward to having a couple of drinks together and talking over the films.

I'll admit, after viewing almost all of the 13 teaser videos on the website, it looks WAAAY more fun that I thought. How on earth do you decide what to see? Shame on me for thinking it was one dark Holocaust flick after another, altho that would appeal to Flann ...
I hope the week is fabulous for all who can attend any of the films. Keep us updated on your favorites.

Flann here, standing in line for her first film.
Posted by: Flannista | June 19, 2012 at 11:44 AM
Just heard from Flann! She has seen "Virgin Tales" and "The Imposter" so far. "Virgin Tales" was very good. "The Imposter" was "one of the best" she's ever seen at SilverDocs. Absolutely fascinating.
She's heading into "Chasing Ice" now.
So "no casualties" of the day except she lost her light jacket, and it's been freezing in the theaters.
Posted by: Matissta | June 19, 2012 at 03:53 PM
She also said that almost every film is already sold out! Which means I must wait in the standby line for some of the movies to see if I can get in.
I'm not used to that, as we usually stroll right in.
Ugh! I hate this!
