Thanks for the birthday greetings, Flann! I'm looking forward to the day, and what a nice way to get it started!

Flannista

I was hoping that you would share the back story of this poem, treesta . . .

treesta

Hmm... well, let me get dressed and in to work first... smile...

Flannista

Okey-doke

Flannista

A note in my copy of Evidence indicates that I first read this poem on 4/11/09. I added this note: "Karen's [my sister] ashes were given to the ocean."

treesta

A bittersweet note about this poem, Flann.

treesta

OK, so on to the back story of this poem...

A couple of weeks ago, Flann and I were sitting in her living room talking. Flann was discussing an 'intention' she had set for her life - to 'kiss the joy as it flies by' on a daily basis.

Then we began talking about me. Now, as those of you who 'know me in the flesh' are aware, I am a rather quiet and introverted individual, particularly in social situations. I am not one to 'put myself out there'. In fact, I long ago learned to protect myself by being as unobstrusive as possible. The child in me perceived that one of the cardinal sins was to embarrass or make a fool of oneself. So I rarely 'let loose', in any way. As Flann puts it from time to time, "treesta, you run the gamut of emotions, from A to B."

Anyway, at some point in the conversation, Flann provided a challenge, "So, treesta, what's your intention?"

I had to think on it for awhile, but one line from this Mary Oliver poem kept coming back to me, "leap in the froth of the waves".

So that's the intention I am setting for myself this year - to look for opportunities to 'leap in the froth of the waves', now, not waiting for the time when it's my ashes doing the dancing.

Matissta

Happy Birthday, treesta! Enjoy your day.

Matissta

So what's the back story?

Flannista

OOPS! Matissta must have posted her comments before she read the "back story" in your 7:31 a.m. comment, treesta.

Flannista

treesta -- you were mistaken. I said that you ran "the gamut of emotions from A to B-minus". Give yourself some credit.

Seriously, however, I was really touched to get this email after treesta and I had that conversation. I think "leaping in the froth" (and it could be a Stella Artois froth) is wonderful.

Thanks, treesta, for making yourself so vulnerable and sharing your intention which is really a birthday gift for all of us.

PEACEsista

Happy Birthday, dear treesta! Wishing you JOY as you "leap in the froth and waves" -- a most beautiful and poetic intention!

Flannista

I love this idea of intentions: anyone else want to share theirs?

Flannista

The word in the Code Thingy for my last comment: BLISS

Flannista

Speaking of BLISS and I have no idea what it means that I scheduled this on treesta's birthday . . . but I have my preliminary appointment for my colonoscopy . . . the one you should have every 10 years. I had my last one when I was 50 years old and was, as the doctor said, "Clean as a whistle." I'm not sure when I'll actually schedule this colonoscopy. Probably in the middle of September.

Back to leaping in the froth.

Matissta

Flann, only you would announce your colon was "clean as a whistle" in the 'sphere. Please don't elaborate.

treesta

You two are funny. And thanks, Matiss and PEACE, for the birthday wishes.

I like the concept of an 'intention', as opposed to, say, 'resolutions'. An 'intention' has an openness to it, a willingness to receive what life has to offer.

Yeah. Leap in the froth of the waves. I like it.

Flannista

Another intention: not to elaborate on the results of my colonoscopy 10 years ago.

Matissta

treesta, I just realized the Redskins are playing tonight. I guess we know what you'll be doing.

Pachasista

Happy Birthday, treesta!

Westsista

Happy Birthday treesta! I hope this upcoming year brings you many opportunities to dance and celebrate.

I remember when I worked with my friend Steve, who was the first among us to have a colonoscopy. He sent us a video via email - yes, the video of his colonoscopy. We referred to him as "colon boy" for years. It was one of the funniest things that has ever happened to me at work. So Flann, you haven't really over-shared unless you've sent out the video.

treesta

Thanks, Pacha, and GO, REDSKINS!! I am bound and determined to go to a game this year!!

treesta

Thanks, West. So, yeah, Flann, where's your colon video?

Flannista

I've decided instead to share a video of my mammography exam at the end of October.

This birthday gift made me laugh out loud:

My colleague and partner in crime, Josie, has been making this whole week very special with little gifts and cards each day. This afternoon, she gave me one last gift, which I was not expecting at all! Now, I have to preface this by saying that when I get stressed or angry, one coping strategy I utilize is to brush my teeth. (Yes, seriously.) Josie knows me well. My last gift - a gift bag full of Crest toothpaste. Ha Ha. Loved it. Laughed OUT LOUD.
